A brilliantly made war film, four years younger than Battle of the Bulge, but infinitely better in terms of historical accuracy of wartime technology. True, the Messerschmitt Bf 109s could have done with a couple of tweaks in the area between the propeller and the cockpit, but still, close enough. With such a great cast, it would have taken some really bad writing or directing for it to fail. Fortunately, it wasn’t the case, and it turned out to be a terrific spectacle. It's amazing what was possible without the use of CGI. ()
Even today, almost thirty years after its release, this is still one of the best, and probably the most faithful, aerial war film. The aerial fights themselves are absolutely thrilling and filmed in an unusually dynamic way. It is a reconstruction of events rather than a film with a classic story. ()
