The pig-killing fest on an old farm is a tradition Karel looks forward to every year. It’s the only chance for the whole family to get together, have a good time, engage in a squabble or two, and enjoy some great food. But this time things are different. The butcher hides the fact his cartridges are damp, grampa can’t bring himself to tell Karel, recently widowed, that this slaughter will be their last, daughter Lucie is depressed after her marital breakup, and grandson Dušík runs away while his parents argue over whether he’s old enough to watch the kill. As for Karel, the pig’s blood spilling everywhere is the last straw... Adam Martinec’s feature debut is a remarkably incisive study of the Czech temperament which, through its visceral character portrayal and searing humour, evokes the masterworks of the Czechoslovak New Wave. La matanza familiar en la comedia sirve como una oportunidad para que se reúnan parientes de cuatro generaciones y amigos, que comienzan a resolver diferentes desacuerdos mutuos, ya sean de pareja, padres o vecinos. Los diálogos naturales y auténticos de actores (no) profesionales magistralmente dirigidos y brillantemente interpretados revelan mucho sobre la naturaleza típicamente checa y en muchos lugares son simplemente hilarantes. No todas las líneas de conversación iniciadas tienen un final claro, sin embargo, el desenlace de la película se lleva a cabo en tonos claramente conciliadores. La película puede parecer inicialmente como entretenimiento popular (y en parte lo es), pero también se opone al retratar principalmente la vulnerabilidad de sus personajes y aborda incluso la matanza como un vestigio pasado por alto de la época, en lugar de elevarla como una tradición popular rural.

Un sondeo pequeño, modesto y absolutamente eficaz en la mentalidad del pueblo checo, evocando clásicos checoslovacos como La fiesta de las campanillas y ¡Al fuego, bomberos! Adam Martinec sabe cómo guiar a los actores y no actores perfectamente seleccionados a una autenticidad absoluta, que de otra manera sería difícil de encontrar en el cine checo contemporáneo. Observa a sus personajes, aunque imperfectos y algunos literalmente horribles, con empatía y sin juicio. La vida no es ne blanco y negro, y el creador lo sabe muy bien. Junto con el director de la película de hace dos años Somewhere Over the Chemtrails, ahora tenemos dos Adams, ¡cuyos próximos proyectos valdrá la pena seguir! [KVIFF 2024]

(KVIFF) Our Lovely Pig Slaughter is a Czech film in the truest sense of the word, from the filmmakers, to the pig slaughter theme, to a nod to domestic works from the 1960s. At first, we witness an ordinary family event, but it is a catalyst for deeper themes in interpersonal relationships. Our Lovely Pig Slaughter has the potential to engage a wide audience, mainly due to how it manages to translate that very ordinary family reunion to the big screen in such an engaging way, which of course had a lot to do with the cast and their grounded performances. The ubiquitous light and natural humour is effectively interspersed with serious sequences that sometimes gave me a chill, only to be amused again one scene later at the expense of the characters. I am definitely very curious about Adam Martinec's next film.
