El detective privado Philip Marlowe (Robert Mitchum) ha sido contratado por el enorme maleante y ex presidiario Moose Malloy (Jack O Halloran) para localizar a su antigua amante, Velma Valento (Charlotte Rampling), de la que no tiene noticias desde que fue encarcelado seis años atrás. Philip contactará con Tommy Ray (Walter McGinn), antiguo trompetista de la sala de fiestas donde trabajaba Velma, y con Jessie Florian (Sylvia Miles), una antigua amiga de Velma. "The house itself wasn't much. It was smaller than Buckingham Palace and probably had fewer windows than the Chrysler building..." With Marlowe, it was never about how well he could throw a punch, handle a weapon, or his physical condition, but rather the "sound" of the actor portraying him. Forget about age, Robert Mitchum nails it and brings the necessary lightness to the role. That lightness might be missing, except in the case of the cop Harry Dean Stanton, disregarded by those around him, but when it comes to the journey of a weary private investigator, where between the sudden start and the anticipated end, there are a few beatings, surprises, seemingly meaningless detours, and corpses, you can count on it. Maybe it was the neon lights, but not once did I think there were too many colors.
