Rooster Cogburn, un sheriff borracho y ya en decadencia, es despojado de su placa por el juez federal Parker, debido al exceso de dureza que esgrime en su búsqueda y captura de forajidos. Solo y sin saber qué hacer, Rooster se siente frustrado por la falta de acción en su vida. Sin embargo, pronto vuelve a estar en activo, porque el gobierno le confía la misión de capturar al bandido Hawk y su banda, que han robado nitroglicerina al ejército. Por el camino, Rooster se encuentra con una adusta y seria mujer de Nueva Inglaterra, Eula Goodnight, que ha visto morir a su padre, misionero, y a los indios que cristianizaba, a manos del mismo Hawk al que Rooster sigue la pista. Who would've thought that an alcoholic cat owner like John Wayne and a devout defender like Katharine Hepburn would make such a fantastic duo? This is a great, laid-back western with stunning scenery and a cat that John Wayne uses to win you over from the very first minutes.

John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn are such a great combination that one cannot resist them. Moreover, both giants of world cinema prove that their acting skills have not dulled in the slightest with age, both in terms of humor and action, especially in the case of the Duke. Katharine was 14 days older, and both of them were already 68 years old during filming, but neither of them showed it.
