En la selva del sureste de Asia se rueda una superproducción sobre la guerra de Vietnam con varias estrellas: Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.), un intenso actor tres veces ganador del Oscar; Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), estrella de una popular y grosera saga de películas, Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) estrella del hip-hop metido a actor, y el novato Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel). Pero, a medida que transcurre el rodaje, todo lo que podría ir mal, va mal. Todos se quejan por las condiciones de trabajo. La situación va de mal en peor, sobre todo para el director de la cinta, Damien (Steve Coogan). Tanto es así, que su reparto de estrellas acaba abandonado en mitad de la jungla. Ellos creen que Damien los seguirá filmando con cámaras ocultas, pero lo cierto es que en la selva se desarrolla una auténtica guerra. Así pues, los protagonistas deberán hacer todo aquello que harían sus personajes, y sobre todo, comportarse como auténticos soldados si quieren salir con vida de ese infierno. Hacía tiempo que no me reía tanto y tan sinceramente con algo de principio a fin. Ben Stiller da en la diana. Sólo por los avances de apertura, Tropic Thunder: ¡Una guerra muy perra! merece cinco estrellas.

El potencial cómico de Jack Black está desaprovechado, su personaje podría haber sido interpretado por cualquier cómico desconocido y la película no habría sufrido por ello.. Ben Stiller sólo es gracioso cuando interpreta a «un tío al que interpretó en otra película». Robert Downey es genial solo gracias a su acento negro. Por cada buen chiste en 20 minutos, hay diez forzados o francamente sin gracia. Tuve sensaciones parecidas a las de Tropic Thunder al ver los extras de Jakubisko en Bathory. Sin concepto y engorroso. Lo único que sobresale de la media y da en el clavo es Tom Cruise. Me gustan las comedias disparatadas, las parodias, las películas bélicas y la crítica a Hollywood, pero lo siento, me gustan los filetes bien hechos.

Very wacky and with a bold humour that is very close to my heart. On the plus side, the casting is great, some of the actors were unrecognizable (Tom Cruise wtf? ! I also had a problem with the black Robert Downey Jr.), the plot is fine and fresh, the lines are crazy and Ben Stiller steals the whole movie for himself, after all, he directs it. I believe it was incredibly fun to make. Great line from the movie: “I'll cradle the balls, stroke the shaft, work the pipe, and swallow the gravy. Get it over here, buddy. Let's do this.”

Stiller is getting smarter and smarter, and he can make fun of things you thought everyone had already made fun of enough a long time ago. After the modeling industry, Hollywood is taking the hit with such vigor it's chilling if it's really true. The excellent technical aspects are just the cream on the cake, but the cherry on top is Tom Cruise - at least for having the courage to make such an ass of himself, and with such grace that I would really give him the Golden Globe!

Stiller knows very well that making a parody doesn’t mean making one-to-one copies of one scene after another, but rather about well scattered nods and making sure that the movie works as a whole. You need to be skilled enough to shoot it at least as well as the original. This “anti" Hollywood Tropic Thunder was no disappointment in that respect. But, as hard as it tries, it just isn’t funny. It simply tries too hard and turns out unnatural. It’s like Stiller missed his fellow Frat Packers and their chemistry and interplay. Maybe it should have set out on the journey to absolute absurdity that we know from Zoolander or Dodgeball rather than this rather vulgar normality.
