It's fascinating how, just twelve years after World War II, the Americans came out with a naval drama featuring a destroyer on one side and a submarine on the other. What's even more intriguing is how the film explores the idea that not every German agreed with Hitler's actions at the time, yet still fought for their country. It's a nice touch, though very much a product of its time. The action sequences are somewhat quaint by today's standards, and the German submarine crew looks like they're dressed for a beach outing. At its core, the film is about the battle between two mentally strong men, and it delivers on that front. A solid piece of classic cinema. ()
