En un viaje a Cambodia, Ben -joven alemán recién graduado- conoce a Sreykeo, una chica de 21 años, originaria de Phnom Penh, quien se gana la vida como "acompañante" en un bar de la ciudad. Algo nace entre ellos, pero Ben debe regresar a casa. Cuando descubre que Sreykeo está enferma, decide responsabilizarse por cuidarla y encontrar una cura. It’s been a while since I caught a truly good European film on Cinemax, and this time, it’s a gem from Germany—a country that, not too long ago, most people were quick to criticize. Same Same But Different is a beautiful life story about love and the idea that some people really do care for one another. It's a genuinely touching film. The scenes set in Cambodia are stunning, though the parts in Germany drag a bit. But by the end, it really packs a punch, and that’s what matters most.

It's rare to make a film about great love where one of the partners falls ill with a fatal disease without it becoming a real wringer of emotions. Here I feel that the German filmmakers truly succeeded. Apart from the story itself, you may be intrigued by the exotic Cambodian setting in which much of the action takes place. The meticulously arranged soundtrack, featuring both European and Asian music, also deserves special attention. (75%)
