Carlos Galindo soñaba con cosas buenas para su mujer y futuro hijo cuando cruzaron la frontera de los Estados Unidos. Pero cuando su mujer le dejó, porque quería más de lo que él le podía ofrecer, centró todos sus esfuerzos en lograr que su hijo Luis tuviera las oportunidades que él nunca tuvo. Después de años de duro trabajo, de intentar ser un ejemplo para su hijo, se da cuenta de que se ha distanciado de Luis, ahora un adolescente, sometido a la presión de los chavales de su edad y entorno, expuesto a elecciones que le podrían hacer seguir un camino peligroso. Creyendo que va a poder controlar su propio destino y el de su hijo, Carlos reúne el poco dinero que consigue que le presten y lo invierte todo en su negocio de jardinería, con la esperanza de alcanzar esa vida mejor que siempre ha imaginado para su hijo.
