The story opens with a suicide of a young woman. By her body, a man starts telling the story of their meeting, wedding and life together. It is his way of understanding the reasons behind what she did. Bresson's first adaptation of Dostoyevsky marks the start of the director's new creative phase. From now on, gloominess and tragedy will be in colour. (Summer Film School)
