The War of the Gargantuas is exactly the kaiju film you expect it to be. There is tension, there are special effects, which are again quite acceptable, and there is destruction and a battle between monsters. Still, I can't help but feel that Ishirô Honda is starting to come across as an incredible routine director, who has simply learned to shoot these films as easily as possible and continues in this manner with each subsequent installment. It's a shame because the first installment, even under his direction, was undoubtedly more inventive.
