Another artsy film that tackles the painful trauma of losing a loved one by forcing the audience to watch characters stare blankly into space or wander aimlessly through streets and nature. I have a huge problem with this approach; watching something like this for nearly two hours brings me nothing but tedious boredom and emptiness. I spend most of the film trying to connect with it, to get into it, but I usually fail — just like in this case. What makes it worse here are the slow dialogues, delivered with the same cadence as Barack Obama's speeches. A Love Story is a cold, impenetrable film that aims for a strong moment of catharsis that never arrives. It's well-shot but hard to connect with.
