One might think that Czech and Slovak filmmakers have already said all there is to say about the period around 1968 in Czechoslovak history. As Jiří Mádl’s outing shows, however, this crucial era in our modern history still has forgotten stories to offer that are worthy of our attention. The film revolves around the international news office at Czechoslovak Radio, a place full of talented individuals possessing broad insight, linguistic skills, and above all a commitment to honest journalistic work with a focus on the truth. An epic, dynamically shot, rewarding film, which embraces uncommon heroism in the face of an oppressive regime, the strength of fraternal ties, and the eternal themes of love, betrayal, morality, and hope. I caught Waves during the third screening at the summer cinema, and it was still completely packed. That’s how much this film has resonated with the Czech nation. And honestly, it’s well-deserved. After so many years, here’s a movie that tackles an important topic in a quality and engaging way—something everyone should know about, especially the younger generations who need to remember what happened around 1968. With his third film, Jiří Mádl has truly cemented his talent, and I was captivated for over two hours, subconsciously applauding. Waves is a big film, not just in quality but in content. It’s written with a strong emphasis on objectivity and features some of the top Czech actors of today. There isn’t just one main hero here; the film portrays multiple characters whose actions are both black and white, deeply influenced by the times they lived in. It’s hard to blame them for the choices they made. The Czechoslovak Radio of that era definitely deserved a film like this.

Jirka Mádl ha logrado hacer algo que no se ve a menudo en la cinematografía checa contemporánea. Ha hecho una película de calidad europea. Ha contado una historia que, sin ningún patetismo ni blanco y negro, funciona bien como testimonio histórico, pero también como paralelismo con la actualidad y los acontecimientos recientes en otros lugares que no sean nuestro país. Los 130 minutos pasan volando y después del final la película resuena muy bien, lo que se confirma con el gran aplauso del público en el estreno de este año en el Gran Salón. [KVIFF 2024]

De todos los trabajos de dirección anteriores de Jiří Mádl, en los que hasta ahora siempre destacaba una notable ingenuidad e incredulidad, Waves es de lejos el mejor. Entre otras cosas, porque ya no sufre de este defecto. La película está muy bien tratada en términos de su estructura dramatúrgica, y su narrativa clásica cuidadosamente estructurada entrelaza sin problemas un gran número de líneas argumentales. La película es un ejemplo de artesanía de primer nivel en todos los aspectos, ya sea en términos de estilización de la época, vestuario, actuaciones o música. Gracias a la música vibrante, el montaje dinámico y la habilidad para construir la tensión, las escenas que incluyen enfrentamientos policiales con estudiantes manifestantes, la llegada de tanques a Praga en agosto de 1968 o el asalto militar al edificio de la Radio Checa no tienen nada que envidiar a muchos thrillers de acción de Hollywood en términos de intensidad y efectividad. En la cantidad de personajes secundarios hábilmente escritos y variados, basados en periodistas y locutores reales de la redacción extranjera de entonces, que luchaban contra la censura durante la primavera de Praga y hacían todo lo posible para mantener la transmisión durante la invasión, reina la total claridad, al igual que en sus emociones y motivaciones. Esta importante historia merecía un tratamiento honesto, elaborado y de primer nivel, por lo que es extremadamente gratificante ver que Waves se cuenta entre las películas checas contemporáneas más exitosas.

Jiří Mádl ha logrado filmar una película de época de calidad que puede enriquecer al espectador no solo con información histórica. Debo admitir que desconozco a algunos de los protagonistas de los eventos de la Primavera de Praga en la Radio Checoslovaca y me alegra haber aprendido algo sobre ellos gracias a la película. Ha elegido un elenco de actores fuerte, muchos de los cuales están en alza en este momento, especialmente Vojtěch Vodochodský y Jan Nedbal. El primero se ocupó perfectamente de un personaje principal bastante ambiguo que lucha con grandes conflictos internos. Toda la película está muy bien filmada, tiene un aspecto profesional y definitivamente no tenemos que avergonzarnos de ella más allá de nuestras fronteras. Si tuviera que señalar algo, serían los detalles; Vojtěch Kotek como Jiří Dienstbier no me parece adecuado, ni siquiera la barba ayuda. No viví en esa época, pero no me parece que en algún lugar del territorio checoslovaco hubiera moteles como en las películas americanas.

I had to process the film for 2 days. Really 2 days, to organize all my thoughts about this powerful experience. Jiří Mádl truly outdid himself and offered viewers a drama that will get under your skin. And it absolutely meets the strictest standards when compared to global productions. At times, I couldn’t believe that such a precisely polished diamond came from the Czech scene. Otherwise, from an acting standpoint, it's also a completely grand spectacle! Every cast member performed as if their life depended on it! Besides all that, the film offers an unsettling soundtrack that could easily be mistaken for one from Western productions. Story-wise, it's a strong piece that will make you think. I didn’t take my eyes off the screen for a single minute! And when the last half hour hit—two words: emotional bomb. I realized that Mádl truly created something unique... something unique about a dark chapter of Czech history that should be mandatory viewing in schools. I genuinely wish from the bottom of my heart that he at least makes it to the nomination for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars. Waves deserves it! I give it 8.5/10

One might think that this is a topic that has been covered a hundred times, exhausted from top to bottom. However, I must refute all skeptics by saying that such a film about Czech history has not been made before. I knew almost nothing about the events at Czechoslovak Radio. I didn't know the names of the heroes who ensured free broadcasting until the last moments. Everyone should go to see Waves in the movie theater, not only because the film is worth it, but also because it is chillingly relevant and reminds us of situations happening not far from us. Waves has everything. It will give you goosebumps, move you, and make you laugh. Your adrenaline will rise, and you will desperately wish for the characters to come out well, even though you know it is a false hope. Excellent cinematography, perfectly fitting music, and the final soundtrack. Jiří Mádl, the actors, and everyone else who contributed to the film deserve recognition and for you to actually go to the movie theater.
