Un exdetective vive retirado con el falso nombre de Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) en una pequeña localidad regentando una gasolinera, enamorado de la pesca y de una jovencita con la que quiere casarse. Sin embargo, un viejo conocido acude al lugar anunciándole que el jefe quiere verle. Bailey se ve obligado a contarle a su novia su turbio pasado: años atrás, con su auténtico nombre de Jeff Markham, fue contratado por un hampón, Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas), para buscar a su amante, Katie Moffett (Jane Greer), fugada con 40.000 dólares. Apenas comienza a investigar, el detective da con el paradero de ella en Acapulco pero en un principio cree en su inocencia y trata de protegerla y se enamora de ella. Ambos se fueron a vivir a San Francisco pero ella, tras dar muerte a un antiguo socio de Bailey que les había descubierto, volvió a huir. En realidad se trata de una peligrosa criminal capaz de cometer cualquier fechoría con tal de ver cumplidos sus objetivos. (Movistar+)

Rica en giros, súper diálogos y situaciones tensas, el estupendo Kirk Douglas en el papel secundario. Sin embargo, ambos personajes principales están mal dirigidos por el director, por lo que incluso el sorprendente final resulta extraño e insatisfactorio.

A great genre piece with excellent dialogs and some snappy one-liners from Mitchum in the main role. Unexpectedly experimental in terms of form. The narration alternates in terms of type and tempo, unraveling the story down to its core and a surprising ending. P.S.: Good old Kirk Douglas rocks in this, one of his first movie roles.

The first half is a supreme example of classic noir, where the narrative on two levels is completely immersive and the characters act unpredictably, yet logically and inevitably. In the second half, when the plot moves purely into the present, the script runs out of steam and the direction gets a bit stale, but for the dramatic and again logical climax, the plus points go back to the filmmakers. Definitely a must-have textbook for enthusiasts.

I guess I've seen so many film noirs lately that I need a break from them. I've always been so drawn to this genre and would love to write something in it someday, but Out of the Past isn't as great as I thought it would be. I guess I was expecting something a little different from Tourneur because his previous films have impressed me. It's a good film noir, but it's not as great as I thought it would be.
