Apples

Apples is a pleasantly sedate and down to earth representative of the Greek Weird Wave, which does not feel rushed, revealing its very heart gradually with subtle hints, and it is almost therapeutic, after which you can feel at peace with everything. [KVIFF 2021] (15.09.2021)

Oh boy, where to start without spoiling anything and ruining the experience for future viewers who might stumble upon this review? I'll tread lightly. I had to dock a star for the numerous logical inconsistencies or unexplained elements. Honestly, I could easily justify an even lower rating for these reasons, but I refrained because the film is both intriguing and unique. It successfully delivers subtle but noticeable humor at the expense of digital technologies, which made me enjoy the analog era once again. I'm not one to idolize the past, but there's something charming about the analog days when people actually looked around instead of constantly staring at their phone screens. Seeing these half-zombies on the streets today always reminds me of the classic method of dangling a treat in front of a donkey to get it moving (purely coincidental similarity, of course). I enjoyed this slow, quirky film despite its flaws, and although I wouldn't mimic the protagonist's actions, I fully understood his motives. / "Are you sure you know how to drive?"
