El ambicioso científico Franz Walter acepta trabajar para el servicio de inteligencia exterior de la RDA y promete lealtad absoluta al sistema hasta que pueda asumir su nuevo cargo como catedrático en la universidad. Franz, pronto se verá obligado a utilizar prácticas no muy adecuadas para conseguir las peticiones de sus superiores: vigilancias y escuchas telefónicas, cartas y diagnósticos falsificados, chantajes y presiones psicológicas. Pero esto es más de lo que Franz puede soportar… Y se producirá un súbito giro en la historia. (Adso Films)

Though it seems mundane at first, this film is actually a two-hour psychological breakdown of an intelligent man — a doctor — pushed to his limits by the regime. It's brutal and uncompromising from a psychological standpoint. That era must have been horrendous, and I can't understand how anyone could look back on it fondly. Today’s youth would probably crumble under the first bit of pressure from above. If they didn't, they'd likely just spill everything, thinking they have the right to do so.
