Daniel es un conocido actor que una mañana deja atrás su elegante ático en Berlín, su preciosa esposa y a la niñera que cuida de sus dos hijos pequeños para volar a Londres para el casting de una película de superhéroes. De camino al aeropuerto se acerca al bar de siempre para repasar el texto y tomar un café tranquilamente sin darse cuenta de que su vecino Bruno, al que nunca antes había visto, viene siguiéndole de cerca. En el bar, Bruno comienza a conversar con Daniel en lo que queda claro que no es un encuentro casual. El vecino de la puerta de al lado tiene información íntima sobre la vida de Daniel y su familia que hace que el encuentro se convierta en una incómoda experiencia. (Karma Films)

Una película de conversación bien hecha, bien interpretada no solo por Daniel Brühl, sino también por su pareja en la película Peter Kurth. No tiene un guión explícitamente revelador o cautivador, pero mantiene hábilmente el interés y la curiosidad del espectador, y en la segunda mitad incluso logra sacarse de la manga ases que cambiarán la perspectiva de la percepción de los personajes. Lo más valioso de la película es el retrato autobiográfico de Brühl de su verdadero yo como actor alemán afincado en Berlín y de éxito mundial. Y fragmentos de su interacción como celebridad con la vida cotidiana. [KVIFF]

Daniel Brühl trajo este año a Karlovy Vary su debut discreto pero seguro y dinámicamente dirigido, y debo reconocer que me sorprendió lo mucho que me atrapó después de un tiempo. Este drama conversacional rico en ideas, con un poco de humor y muchas sorpresas, recuerda prácticamente a una obra de teatro, se desarrolla predominantemente en una habitación con dos personajes principales y fluye a un ritmo muy rápido. De hecho, estoy bastante curioso por ver a qué se enfrentará Daniel detrás de la cámara la próxima vez. [KVIFF 2024]

Daniel Brühl’s directorial debut is a standout. It perfectly captures the contrasting mindsets of West and East Germans. Initially, it sets the stage in a typical dive bar, the kind where the first alcoholics start banging on the door at ten in the morning. But soon enough, it evolves into an intense drama centered around Brühl playing himself and Peter Kurth as his long-time neighbor, who holds up a mirror to Brühl's life. It’s a well-crafted dialogue-driven piece where the tension escalates with every second.

This "pub western" pitting a western star against an earthy eastern dude has potentially many layers (the relationship between West and East, gentrification, superficial glamour, loneliness), but Brühl, as director and protagonist, chooses the path of likable caricature. It's nice to look at, but it doesn't leave much of a mark on you, and Peter Kurth wins overwhelmingly in this shootout with his much more believable and nuanced acting. Ironically, the main star gets off too cheaply.

Definitely not a comedy, on the contrary, it’s a full drama in with literally 90 minutes of talking, talking and talking, and not a single action sequence or joke. According to the reviews, it shook some people, but it left me completely cold. I didn't find the debates interesting, there was no significant tension, twists, conflicts or a climax of the plot. Boring.

Now that's what they a bad day or, more precisely, a shitty day. I don't know how else to describe in a nutshell what successful actor Daniel experiences when, in the morning, all excited about a big role and goes to a local bar where he meets an elderly man named Bruno, who turns out to be Daniel’s neighbor, and is very taken with him. After that, an excellent conversation starts, which is clever and has balls, is somewhat unreadable, full of sudden twists and turns, and therefore also great fun. The resulting positive impression given by this movie is underscored by very convincing performances by Daniel Brühl and Peter Kurth. (85%)

A brilliantly escalated psycho conversational drama. I really appreciate the gradual unveiling and escalation of the seriousness of the conversation between these two neighbors, it makes you wait a long time to see what will come out of it. And even though it's not very comedic in the end, I had a lot of fun when Bruno somehow always felt the need to criticize Daniel's works (putting down his acting performances, but also the scripts themselves) and how Daniel tried so hard to pretend that he wasn't affected at all and that he didn't care about the opinion of some ordinary viewer. And how he kept trying to leave, but kept coming back because he needed to know more; in that respect I found it hilariously funny, otherwise it was rather creepy. The direction and the acting are great. Daniel Brühl clearly has talent.
